OREC/NREL Community Listening Sessions

Tuesday, February 6th and Wednesday, February 7th, 2024

5-7 PM both nights at High Plains Technology Center in Woodward, Oklahoma

Join us on Tuesday, February 6th and Wednesday, February 7th for a series of events co-hosted by OREC and the National Renewable Energy Lab to discuss end of service for wind energy development in Oklahoma. Both events will be hosted at the High Plains Technology Center in Woodward, Oklahoma. We hope you’ll join us for either (or both!) events.

On Tuesday, February 6th, we will be hosting an event for junior high and high school students in partnership with KidWind starting at 5 PM. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a wind energy activity with KidWind and will learn more about wind energy development. NREL will also discuss their research and present career and internship opportunities for students. At the end, you will have an opportunity to share your experience with end of life proccesses for wind farms and also ask questions of the NREL researchers. Snacks and refreshments will be provided! This is an open-house style event and we welcome you to join us when you can!

  • Starting at 5 PM, we will have an interactive activity for students with KidWind as well as booths for OREC, NREL, and High Plains where students can learn more about opportunities in the industry.
  • Starting at 6 PM, we will hear from NREL about their research and students will have the opportunity to share their thoughts on the wind energy industry during a special student-focused listening session.

On Wednesday, February 7th, we will be hosting a larger research presentation and community discussion from 5-7 PM. NREL will start with a presentation of their current research on end of service activities for wind energy development and will share some of the resources available on the topic. We will then shift to a discussion of the experience of attendees in regard to end of service for wind energy development in Oklahoma. From this event, NREL hopes to:

  • Learn about community perspectives about end of service activities and impacts
  • Learn about community/landowner perspectives about end of service roles and responsibilities
  • Increase our knowledge about unique local end of service experiences

Dinner catered by Chase's BBQ Shack!

OREC members, we are planning a wind farm tour on February 7th prior to the community event. Please reach out to us if you are interested.

Please e-mail Claire Burch at burchcm@ou.edu if you have any questions about either event.
